First Lady Stresses Small Steps To Improve Health

WASHINGTON – First lady Michelle Obama is stressing small changes in diet and exercise habits as a good way to improve health and fitness.

In other words, don't try to try change everything at once. Mrs. Obama says choose walking over driving, or add a vegetable or fruit to meals, or switch from soda to water. Mrs. Obama says she knows firsthand that change is difficult. But with nearly one-third of children in the U.S. either overweight or obese, she says some things have to be done differently.

Mrs. Obama spoke Tuesday during a visit to the Department of Health and Human Services. The department recently announced that communities can apply for a share of $493 million in economic stimulus funds for programs to encourage people to exercise more and eat better.
