NEW YORK! NEW YORK: WE CAN’T JUST LET IT GO...NOT THIS TIME!

Washington, DC -- Today, Dr. E. Faye Williams, National Chair of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc. issued the following statement: “What’s with New York? We continue to get these bold racist messages from New York.. Recently, the offender was a New York bakery with ‘Drunken Negro Head Cookies’. Now we have a picture in the New York Post of a police officer shooting a chimpanzee, boldly making the statement, ‘Now they’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill’.”

Williams said further, “Since there are two police officers standing over a dead chimpanzee, and there is a well known history of some who wish to disparage Black people by referring to us as monkeys, what possible conclusion can we draw except one referring to President Barack Obama because the stimulus bill is highly associated with him? We need to be more vigilant about what we allow to be said about us or done to us. We must be more selective in our purchases of everything—and not continue to pay for others to disparage us. This cartoon is totally disrespectful and dangerous—not just to the President of the United States, but to all Black people. We cannot continue to allow these things to go without speaking out and taking actions that affect the offenders’ bottom line, because each time we do the acts are bolder and meaner. It really is true that people will continue to do to you exactly what you allow them to do if there are no consequences.

There are probably many good people purchasing the New York Post who are obvious to the racist messages the paper continues to publish—but many others know what they are purchasing, and know that they are supporting the habits of the paper. We cannot continue to do that.. No, we can’t JUST LET IT GO—NOT THIS TIME.”
